ELLER

The artists Eller van Buuren and Matijs Wessels are the two artists behind ELLER. Around the time of this case they were creating their new album “Losing Time” and asked me to help design a concert experience for it.

For this project I worked on the stage arrangement, lighting and visuals.

Their idea was to step away from the “band image” and create a new setting for concerts. One where it’s not about the artist, but more so about the music itself.

How did I go about it?

First I had to think about the context of their music. They described their music as; “Music meant to be listened to whilst taking long drives or walks. Something you could easily sing along to.” And they labelled it as “Downtempo Electropop.

Their music is not something to get hyped about, rock out to or dance along too. It’s supposed to be more akin to something like an audio book. Something you can listen to for the story or just relax with. This is something I had to try and implement within the design of the concert.

I split my design into 2 parts

Lighting, Visuals and Arrangement

By analysing concerts and album covers of musicians within similar music genres I determined a visual style which I applied to the lighting, visuals and stage arrangement.

For the visuals specifically I also did a comprehensive deep dive into the lyrics and feeling the music presents to the listener. Based on that information I created some concept animations for each song. To create more of a connection between the visuals and the music I also made each of them audio reactive, to visualise the influence of the music.

To test this I set up a demo concert. This was just to test out the effects of the different implemented aspects of the show and would later have to be touched up and finalized.

Immersion & audience interaction

And now we had to implement the audience participation. For this I focussed on the sing along aspect of ELLER’s music. And I specifically tried to tackle the community aspect of concerts with this design too.

For the immersive implementation, I designed a 360° audio-reactive screen and a karaoke setup. This is a table that functions as a karaoke setup which can be used by the audience to sing along to the songs. This I dubbed the “Lyric Table”.

With it having the ability to display the lyrics of the song live, even people that are possibly newer or have simply joined their friends or family to the concert can sing together with everyone else.

What I’m most proud of within this project is that I managed to create a setup that the artists found exciting to work with. Having them tell me that they feel like their ideas had really gotten a more physical form and hearing from the audience that they thought the visuals really resonated with the songs was a great experience for me.

Here you can find the complete design document for this project. I recommend to either download the file or read in presentation mode. The file is in Dutch.
